The unusual doctor's visit
Karla here. So I finally have time to sit down and write the story about the birth of our son. It is about time some of you may be thinking. Well, amazingly now I have the time and so here is a brief story. It was May 24, 2007, a Thursday and the day of my weekly doctor's appointment. At the doctor's it was time for me to get a "swab" (for those who have been pregnant you know what I'm talking about) to see if I had a staph infection. After the swab the doctor decided that she would check me to make sure that the baby was still breech. It had been breech since the beginning of April and was stubborn enough to not turn even with the attempt of trying to turn it externally (this done by a obstetrician of course). As she was examining me this weird look came across her face and she said "I think you are dilated". Not really worried I was like oh okay whatever. Probably about 1 cm or so. Then she proceeded to say "I think you are 4 cm dilated and your membranes are bulging" (whatever that means). Imagine, 4 cm and no labor. Too bad I wasn't giving birth naturally.
So after double checking again she made a call to the obstetrician to see if he could do a C-section that day, as they do with all breech babies now. He would be too busy but someone else could. Needless to say I was excited/scared/happy all sorts of emotions. We would be having the baby today. I called Brad and told him that I was coming to pick him up from work because the baby was coming today. Surprise. We proceeded to go to the hospital where we waited and waited until there was time for my c-section to be done. My parents drove up from Regina but when they got there we were still waiting. Finally at about 1:45 pm they called us and we proceeded with the c-section procedure. I was very nervous and wanted the whole thing to be over and not happen. Lying on that OR bed I was thinking I don't want to do this but really I had no choice. After a few (actually quite a few) tugs and pulls our son was born and we heard him cry. I was a little in a haze from the odd pain and the violent shivers but still happy.
I hope that that is a good enough story for everyone. I better go now and feed Carter. I will write more about the present time soon.

Karla,
That is quite a story! You must have been shocked and amazed. I'm glad that everything worked out. The pictures that you have posted of Carter are beautiful. I love all that hair. Hope all is well.
Sandra
p.s. I love the name
Hi Karla! Congrats on your beautiful baby. He's adorable. I love all of that hair! What a crazy story-- I don't know what I'd do if the doctor told me I'd be having my baby 3 weeks early. I would still be at work at that point. Glad everything went well, and that Carter is a healthy baby.
